LA PAZ, Mexico – A creeping cactus, known as chirinola, has the ability to move, but it is that rare characteristic and its caterpillar-like shape that is the cause of its predation and population decline.

“It moves from place to place. The back part, or the oldest part, grows in the form of grass, dries out and begins to take root, these feed on the organic matter left by the dead plant and then it advances very slowly. That is its main characteristic,” he said.

The also member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers (SNI), commented that the chirinola is a relative of the sweet pitahaya (Stenocereus thurberi) and a “very important and intelligent” plant for the area, since it grows in “very poor” soils.

“Many people would come and take them to sell. It is an extremely rare plant and that makes it very sought after and therefore susceptible to it starting to decline in population,” he said.

“We know that they are very thorny and, when the cattle are grazing, (the ranchers) remove them. And that is one of the ways in which they are depredated,” Sullivan Higuera Navarro, forestry promoter for the National Forestry Commission of Baja California Sur, explained to Efe.

Like other psychedelics, the mescaline experience is very personal and depends largely on the setting and environment. One of the most popular descriptions of a mescaline trip is found in the pages of Aldous Huxley’s 1954 book ‘The Doors of Perception’.

“The man who returns through the Door in the Wall will never be the same as the man who went out. He will be wiser but less sure, happier but less self-satisfied, more humble in recognizing his ignorance, and better equipped to understand the relation of words to things, of systematic reasoning to the unfathomable mystery he tries, always in vain, to comprehend.”

In the 19th century, the tribes of northern and eastern America were forcibly expelled from their lands by the colonialists of Europe. It was then that the use of peyote became widespread, as these tribes came into contact with the tribes of the Southwest, one of the few places in the United States where the plant grows.
